The History of
Peruvian Ornithological Congress

The Peruvian Ornithological Congress began in 1995 when, for the first time, Peruvian ornithologists (who were few in number) decided to hold a scientific meeting to share and present their research. This gave rise to the 1st National Ornithological Conference (JNO), held in Lima.

At this meeting, it was decided to continue these scientific meetings and hold them every two years in different cities across the country. The 1st JNO was followed by meetings in Arequipa in 1997, Calca in 1999, Puno in 2001, and the 5th JNO in Arequipa in 2003. At this time, it was agreed to change the name to the National Ornithological Congress (CNO), continuing the original numbering. Subsequent meetings have been held under this name in various cities, including Chiclayo, Piura, Cusco (where it was held in conjunction with the 9th Neotropical Ornithological Congress), Ayacucho, and the 10th CNO, held in Chachapoyas.

Starting with the 11th edition, the decision was made to change its name again to the Peruvian Ornithological Congress (CPO), with the city of Iquitos hosting this latest edition under the motto "Let the birds fill your life with joy."

Over the years, the CPO has grown in both the number of participants and the level of organization, increasingly enriching itself with various complementary activities offered to its participants, such as courses, forums, symposia, workshops, contests, etc. Furthermore, it has been expanding into other areas beyond purely scientific aspects, such as painting workshops, birdwatching outings, photography contests, among others.
